Grand Theft Auto – Liberty City Stories

Grand Theft Auto was created by a company called Rockstar. Grand Theft Auto – Liberty City Stories comes from a long line of GTA games that first appeared with Grand Theft Auto in December 1997.

The idea behind GTA is simple; you take the role of a small criminal in a big city. As you start the game you start as a common criminal doing jobs for local mobsters and crime bosses. Grand Theft Auto – Liberty City Stories takes you to the dark criminal underworld as jobs include bank robberies, assassinations, car jacking and causing a lot of mayhem. The more jobs you complete the higher up the crime ladder you climb, also the jobs you complete more areas are opened for you to explore. With such huge areas, there are a lot of opportunities to do a lot more then just doing jobs for people. You can drive taxis and became a taxi driver ferrying people around the city for money, buy properties, fly planes. All of this combines into one of the main mechanics of GTA – Liberty City stories, and that is ‘Sandbox Gaming ‘(Non linear gameplay). Other Mechanics that GTA – Liberty City stories has are multiplayer (Wi- Fi multiplayer), Upgradeable players and items (being able to change player’s clothes and upgrading cars), commerce, branching and combat, driving.

So where did GTA – Liberty City stories get its ideas from? Apart from obviously getting ideas from past GTA games. There are previous games that could be said gave GTA designers idea and different mechanics to use in games. The first game that I feel gave inspiration involves the crime element but instead of playing the criminal the roles are reversed, you play the police having to catch criminals. The first game is Miami vice which was released on the Spectrum and Commodore 64 in 1986.

It is split into two different parts which is its main mechanic. There is driving around and the second part is walking around. While walking around the game turns into a shoot – em – up, as you walk around catching and interrogating criminals. This mechanic is one of the fundamental mechanics that GTA – Liberty City stories uses.

Another game that I feel influenced GTA – Liberty City stories is Elite, which was released in 1987.

This game like GTA – Liberty City stories, offered players complete freedom within a 3-D environment. The game provides eight galaxies to explore. You start of with 100 credits and a lightly armoured ship. As you continue through the game credits can be earned by a number of different methods. These include piracy, trade, military missions, bounty hunting and the mining of asteroids. The money that is gained can be used to upgrade your ship and buy better weapons etc. This game I feel has a lot of the mechanics that are used in GTA – Liberty City stories today.
